Angel + Jordan // Relationships - Family Photography

"One time, at church camp..." That's the response I got when I asked Jordan how he and Angel met. No, but really. These two really hit a funny bone and a spot close to my heart when photographing them. Jordan is active duty in the Air Force and has been married to his beautiful wife Angel through two deployments. Yep, you read correctly, TWO whole deployments. He went off to war, she waited patiently (like us military wives do(; ) at home with their two little boys. Not only did that hit close to home with me, but on top of it, Angel is also a photographer and UH-MAZING at being in front of the camera, as well as behind it.

On top of all of the above mentioned, Jordan and Angel have some of the most perfect chemistry I've ever seen between two people. They made my job SO easy. I'll just let you sit back and see what I mean...
Ok, seriously...I have THE BEST clients ever. At least so far. (; Just kidding. But seriously, there was not a difficult part about photographing these two!
Jordan was even a treat! Not only was he comfortable in front of the camera, but he knew exactly what to do and when to do it to get the reactions I wanted from Angel. Her natural ones.
Ok, I'll stop. But I'll still be obsessed with how cute these two are over here, in my chair...to myself.
Stay tuned for exciting announcements really super soon! Happy wednesday!

Peyton // Senior Photography

From the moment she contacted me, I knew Peyton and I would be a perfect fit. Bubbly, a hint of eclectic, and full of life, her personality radiates that she is living her high school years to their fullest. As I went through all of her photos after the shoot, I couldn't help but having Brand New's Soco Amaretto Lime stuck in my head as I was soaking up the essence Peyton had about her. An essence for, not wanting to be older, for loving the moment in life that she is in, embracing it, and everyone around her.

Capturing organic personality is one of the most important things for me as a lifestyle photographer - Peyton made this so easy.
My father-in-law gave me this vintage camera and I've been DYING to use it in a shoot. Peyton's interest in photography and vintage made it oh-so-perfect!
Isn't she S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G?!
Then of course, there's her more quirky side...
Eeek, Peyton, thank you for letting me have so much fun capturing your personality.

Maternity Session (Preview) | Vickie + Daniel

Eek, so I know I've been MIA for a few days. I've been pulled in twenty-THOUSAND directions this week. But I couldn't leave you hanging and feeling unimportant any longer. I'll do a better post at the end of this crazy weekend, promise! In the mean time, here's a little peek at what I'll have for you really super soon. Vickie and Daniel are our good friends and expecting baby number TWO in March.

The sex of the baby is going to be a surprise to them, so we thought we'd do something in preparation for both. Not to mention, it'll be fun looking back on the pictures when their little one gets older and say, "That's what your name would have been."
More to come super soon. Have a lovely weekend!

No Snow Day

So Miss Bailey Budd and I hung out last Thursday because her school was closed due to the bad winter weather and her mommy still had work. If you follow me on Facebook, you'll know this little girl has stolen my heart. She and her mom, Jamie, live in my apartment complex and Bailey likes to make daily visits to hang out with me, cook with me, eat ice cream with me...oh, and ask all of the normal "why" questions a four-year-old would. Oh, and another thing about Bailey, she has her own little four-year-old sense of "style," which on some days, is quite humorous. Last Thursday, as always, she insisted on picking out her clothes. She looked so cute, that I couldn't help but take a few snapshots of her. As you can see, she likes being in front of the camera..
And here's her spunky side, that she IS NOT afraid to show you.
Then, OH THEN, Miss Budd insisted upon being the photographer. After strapping my 50D around her neck, putting her on the grass, making sure NOTHING remotely hard was around, and setting the settings for her, I let her snap a few. I think she was even more halarious behind the camera than she was in front of it. She told me to "work it for the camera" and was snapping like I'm sure she's seen in some tv show.
We didn't have a pretty snowy white day, but I'd say "playing photographer" with a four-year-old was a fair enough trade.

What's in a name?

So, as you may have noticed by my new branding above, I've finally buckled down and decided on a name. After much teetering, worrying, and questioning back and forth, I've decided to move forward with my business as "Kali Norton - Photography & Design."

If you know me well, you know that most of my decisions have more thought and consideration behind them than perhaps, the normal person. This one was no different. What intrigued me the most about my debating, was how many people personally messaged me with a thought out opinion as to why they felt it should be this or that. All of which I took into thought and consideration, by the way! I went back and forth as to what was more pleasing to the ear, what looked best from a design perspective, what was geared aesthetically towards the look and feel I wanted for my business. I drafted branding ideas with every possible match up I could of Kali, Brou, Norton, B., K. Norton, K.B. Norton., Photography, Photography & Design, K. Brou Norton...you get the picture.

I decided on this, for a few reasons. One being, as some of you noted, this is my new name--and with the start of my business and a new life, why not start it off with my new name, given to me by my husband, provider, and number one supporter of my aspirations? Secondly, somehow, after playing with the design of it enough and waking up in the middle of several nights with brainstorms of branding ideas with it, I decided that Kali Norton paired with Photography & Design had the aesthetic feel I wanted.

This is what I started with, before I even made a firm decision towards Kali Norton. (Norton is on here, but that's because it just happened to be the last draft that I had saved.)
Then I had this...
Then I decided that adding "coming soon" was important for me to do, as I am not yet officially a business owner. I feel it is important to respect those who are professionals in the business and have jumped through all of the hoops and red tape to get where they are, thus, I cannot quite YET call myself "Kali Norton - Photography & Design."

BUT, but but, this process is starting this week!
I've probably thought about it way too much that it borders the unhealthy. So I'm retiring it. But rest assured knowing you all helped me think about it in different ways that aided in my final decision. So, here is a rough of what the beginnings of my branding will resemble. The above picture, taken by Melissa Friloux, was one I had in mind when brainstorming ideas for the feel of my brand. The look and feel I will be going for with my business is a mix of sophisticated, quirky, editorial, and serene. Didn't she capture those ideas perfectly?

Stay tuned for future branding brainstorms and the adventures I'll be attacking in becoming an owner of my own business! Happy Monday!
